OUR COATINGS
& THE EFFECTS OF SOLAR RADIATION ON BUILDINGS
Cooling
costs rise based upon temperatures developed from the heat of the sun's
radiation know as “thermal loading”. Unless a
colored exterior wall or roof coating contains specific UV wavelength
blocking, infra-red emissive, solar-reflective pigmentation, it cannot
refract a high enough amount of the sun's radiation to sufficiently
keep the building’s interior from heating up. In this case,
the buildings’ air conditioning/cooling costs will increase.
The same is true if the building roof is not heat reflective. Couple
these facts with increased summer demand and increased cost of energy
and it is easy to understand why California has led the way with CA
Title 24 Regulations. Title 24
now requires new efficiency standards for roofs, walls and openings on
all commercial properties as of October 2005. For
remodel and new construction, Title 24
mandates that buildings must be more efficient in how they manage heat
influx and outflow as functions of heating and cooling performance. The
degree to which a building has reached efficient energy usage is
measured in terms of the entire building
“envelope,” and if the new rules are not followed,
fines have been specified. It is expected that residential
standards will go into effect by 2009.
Depending
upon the efficiency of the wall and/or roof coatings, as well as the
structure of the building, the solar radiation absorbed can be very
high and retained over many hours after the sun has gone down. This
“Urban Heat Island Effect” in all cities has become
a significant factor in atmospheric over-heating and increasing energy
costs and pollution. Non-compliant coatings on buildings means that
this effect is much greater due to the re-radiation of heat from the
building materials after the sun has set. Increasingly severe weather
means greater sunshine and radiation. Only coatings with the highest
solids coupled with specialized metal oxide, infra-red emissive
pigments have the capacity to fully block the UV and reflect IR
radiation and prevent them from penetrating the
coating surface.
The
Ultimate Coatings Company’s cool coating
technology in cross-linking, thermoplastic acrylic paint,THERMO-SEAL™,
and next generation, breathable, high-build,
ECO-THERM™ Elastomeric are
both solar reflective and thermal emissive. They surpass all
premium paints in energy efficiency and are fully colorable. Both use
the sophisticated factory ground, low-toxic, mixed metal oxide pigments
to ensure harmful radiation is blocked and reflected. Any paint job or
recoat done with these products’ pays for itself over the
life of the coating, when seen as a function of cost per square foot
coupled with the amount of electricity consumed for air-conditioning.
Whether applied to concrete tile roofs, metal roofs, concrete or stucco
walls, plywood, and previously coated or uncoated roofs, these coatings
are so efficient that they exceed the 70% solar reflectance standard
set by Title 24 for commercial and
residential buildings. Originally developed for the hot Australian
Outback for metal roofs, These energy efficient coatings enable the
user to benefit right now with lowered electrical costs of as much as
22-50%, depending on whether both walls and roofs are coated.
Dramatically lowered interior temperatures and the security of long
term durability can also be expected. These coatings carry 10- and
12-year product warranties when applied by Approved
Applicators. All of our products are made in the USA.
